Y8 River Tillingbourne Fieldtrip

On the 1st May, 48 eager Year 8 girls set off to the River Tillingbourne in Surrey. The aim was to complete some essential fieldwork for their topic on rivers in geography. After an early morning and being stuck in a bit of rush hour traffic, we arrived at Crossways Farm. Crossways Farm is a fascinating site, which is home to an array of meanders and oxbow scars.  Year 8 were given a quick introduction about how to measure velocity (using dog biscuits!), river depth, discharge and width and were set off to complete their investigations.

Talia, (8D) gave this account:

“Leaving the school bright and early we were all very excited. When we arrived at the site, we walked through the beautiful countryside until we came to the river. With wellington boots on, we all wanted to start our exercises in the river. After listening to some information, we started to measure the length and depth of the river. I really enjoyed working independently as I feel we learnt a lot from our mistakes and debated between different answers.

Afterwards, we measured the velocity of the river using dog treats and a measuring tape. Overall, we all enjoyed the trip and learnt some extremely important skills, which we will all take away to different year groups and further. On behalf of all of Year 8, we would like to thank all the teachers that came along and the geography department for organising this amazing trip”.

The girls will use the data that they collected in their upcoming lessons. Well done to all the girls that took part for their hard work, independence and maturity.
