Chemistry Competition

A group of four Year 10 students recently had the amazing opportunity to visit Kingston University for the second round of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Competition 2018. Held on Wednesday 2nd May, this was a day filled with anticipation and nerves, but we emerged with an overall sense of achievement.

The challenge took place in one of the practical labs where we were able to answer a series of quizzes based on general chemistry, some of which we had not yet studied but were able to work out with team effort and by using our knowledge of chemistry from Year 7 up till now. We were also lucky enough to take part in a practical experiment, which tested our knowledge of the basics as well as our teamwork.

The day as a whole was very enjoyable while, at the same time, putting our chemistry skills to the test. One student commented: “It was really interesting to use chemistry in a different way from school and we enjoyed the challenge”. We all agreed that “it was incredibly fun and so nice to work together”. We used chemistry in a competitive way that was enlightening.

We were given a short tour of the Science department at Kingston University, which amazed all of us; we hope to be involved in something similar in the future.
