GCSE Results 2022 | Croydon High School

Croydon High-flyers achieve outstanding GCSE results –
and so much more!

36% of all grades awarded at the highest possible Grade 9

Over 60% of all grades awarded are Grade 8-9

Over 78% of all grades were Grade 7-9

Croydon High School is celebrating the outstanding endeavours of their 2022 GCSE Class, who have not only achieved impressive academic success but also embraced a unique GCSE Programme, devised by the school, to complement their studies over the last two years.

Annabel Davies, new Head at Croydon High, was clearly thrilled to be able to meet members of her new Lower Sixth cohort and to congratulate them on all they have achieved so far.

“It is very exciting to see such clear evidence of the dedication, hard work and aspiration required to deliver such an impressive set of GCSE results. Primarily, I want to warmly congratulate the pupils who have achieved all this in undeniably challenging circumstances. I also want to pay tribute to their teachers, who have inspired and supported them throughout.”

This cohort was, of course, the first to experience the disruption brought by the pandemic and then go on to sit their examinations in person. They were also the first to experience Croydon High’s revised GCSE programme, which they took on alongside their curriculum studies.

Deputy Head, (Academic) Dr Phil Purvis, explains the thinking behind this exciting approach saying “The GCSE Programme at Croydon High combines the expected academic rigour of a broad and stimulating variety of GCSE subjects with our bespoke, non-examined, Exploring Courses. These courses—which have seen pupils exposed to academic research, environmental awareness, financial literacy, political and philosophical ideology, and leadership skills impart important life skills that will enhance their career aspirations and, in tandem, ignite lifelong passions that will linger long after pupils have left Croydon High School.”

The Climate Change Elective offered by Head of Chemistry, Mrs Howgego, has had an enormous impact on the school community over the last two years. Those who opted to sign up for this have learned about the real fundamentals of climate change and then put their learning in to practice. The group applied for funding from the Surrey Wildlife Trust and having secured a £500 grant, instigated a planting programme and a designated No Mow area in the school grounds, specifically designed to attract bees and other insects.

Mrs Howgego was full of praise for these students “They planned and directed the whole project themselves, collaborating and making decisions with great maturity. It was amazing to watch them pull it all together.”

Eloise Cooper was one of these students and she clearly felt she gained a great deal from the opportunities presented by the school’s GCSE Programme. “It was great to do something different from my academic studies – especially something that I could see was going to really benefit the community. Before I started it, I must admit I wasn’t particularly well informed about climate change but now it’s become a real passion and I really feel I understand the issues.”

Of course, every talented cohort is made up of individuals who all have their own unique strengths and goals, but special mention must be made of those girls who have achieved outstanding results in all subjects.

The following girls have achieved Grade 9 across the board – this is, of course, regarded as the equivalent to a very high-level A*. Warmest congratulations go to Alice Fawcett, Sienna Mehta, Anya Patel and Chloe Wu.

Straight Grades 8-9 (formerly A*) were awarded to Folakemi Awosusi, Pippa Carver, Eloise Cooper, Ana-Luiza Cox, Asha De Silva, Mia Jakimovski, Sophia Jegham, Theoni Kanoutas, Hannah Karpal and Shenai Lewis. Congratulations to them all.

A significant number of students were also celebrating full sets of straight Grades 7-9, which is again a remarkable achievement given the range of subjects studied. Well done to Lauren Baldwin, Olivia Brooks, Ambreen Hirani, Safa Hussain, Aila Macnaughtan-Clark, Maya Malhotra, Emily Monaghan, Mahi Parekh, Shafia Surenchandrakanth and Maddie Webb. Croydon High is very proud of you!

Alongside their academic achievements, the GCSE Class of 2O22 is also made up of numerous individual students who have maintained their involvement – often at very high levels – in a wide variety of co-curricular activities, including sport, music, and art.

It is a hallmark of the school that girls are encouraged and supported to study subjects they love and to reap the benefits of the broad curricular and co-curricular offering.

Sophia Jegham, for example, has managed to achieve a Distinction in her Grade 8 piano examination this year, as well as her clean sweep of Grades 8-9 at GCSE. Mia Jakimovski was also awarded Grades 8 or 9 in all of her GCSE subjects, as well as developing her talents in public speaking, which was recognised by impressive performances in school and GDST competitions.

Eleven students in the cohort have just returned from Edinburgh, where as part of the Croydon High Ivy Players ensemble, they performed an exciting piece of live theatre, “Brainstorm” co-written for and by the cast themselves, to enthusiastic audiences at The Fringe.

It is this holistic approach to learning and developing, both as students and individuals, that is such an integral part of the Croydon High experience. It is also perfect preparation for the Sixth Form at Croydon High, where students will enjoy so many wide-ranging opportunities to hone not only their academic skills, but also the so called ‘soft skills’ which the school regard as essential in preparing them for richly rewarding lives after school.

Congratulations to each and every one of the GCSE Class of 2022 from the whole Croydon High community; it has been an honour to share your journey so far and we look forward to celebrating further success with you in the future!
