Our Nursery pupils had a great time exploring the outdoors in the glorious sunshine, bug hunting at Forest School. As they went round the site looking under tree logs, leaves, and shaking tree branches, bugs were being collected so they could have a closer inspection before setting them free 🐛🪰
Forest school always provides an excellent experience for the girls to understand the creatures’ habitats, explore and enjoy nature, and to be kind and look after our environment.
Nature Club went on an exciting adventure to The Arc Centre where they got to meet and feed a variety of exotic animals.

The girls from Nature Club walked the short journey to The Arc Centre, where they felt like they were in Africa or the Amazon Rainforest with the array of animals they got to meet! They began the adventure with Amazon parrots and a couple of cheeky African greys who keep the keepers on their toes by using their voices to trick the goats and use Alexa to call the keepers at night. The girls then got up close and personal with the mischievous meerkats, who jumped all over them looking for food. Feeding Diablo the porcupine was next. The girls learnt how porcupines run backwards to attack enemies with their quills and were even given one of the quills to bring back to school. Finally, they visited the capybara, who loved a sweet potato and a scratch on the back! Whilst at the centre, the girls also got to meet some friendly guinea pigs, a waddling of ducks and the infamous goats who followed us round for much of the time. Nature Club really enjoyed the trip to the Arc and learnt so much!

Our Junior school welcomed Georgia Ridgeway, a nutritionist from Accent Catering, to lead a special assembly all about healthy eating. Georgia spoke to the girls about the importance of a balanced diet and took them through the nutritional value of different food groups, including carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, fruits & vegetables and fats.
The girls were fully engaged as Georgia explained how each category supports the body in different ways, helping with energy, growth and concentration. It was an informative assembly, and we’re grateful to Georgia and the Accent Catering team for helping our pupils make smart, healthy food choices.

Year 9 and Year 10 set off on their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

On Saturday 17 May, Year 9 embarked on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition through the scenic Surrey Hills.
Our adventure began in the early morning at Shalford Station, where we eagerly awaited our journey to Bentley Copse. As the sun rose higher, each group were able to navigate through lush fields, woodlands and twisting trails, displaying teamwork and perseverance throughout the trip. Although the hills were steep and the sun shone brightly, we overcame challenges by working as a team, and everyone made their way to the campsite. The evening was spent pitching tents, cooking dinner on trangias and sharing stories of the eventful day.
The next morning, everyone woke up to the chirping birds and the excitement of beginning the next day’s hike. We began by planning out our journey, gathering our kit, taking down our tents and preparing for the day ahead of us. Working independently, each team used their orientation skills to take either a northern or southern route on their way back to the station, tackling the intimidating hills, stopping to admire the picturesque views and reflecting on our experiences the previous day. Although we arrived with aching feet and tired legs, the strong sense of accomplishment and pride was evident in every smile, and everyone was pleased that they had been given the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. The experience not only tested our physical strength, but also our ability to be resilient, to think independently, and to work in a team.

Year 10 set off on our Silver Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. We met at Dorking station, where we met with our groups and instructors, before an immediate start to our first day of walking. We very quickly picked up our map-reading skills that we learned from Bronze, and it wasn’t long before we arrived at Hurtwood campsite. After setting up our tents, cooking so much pasta and making lots of hot chocolate on the Trangia stoves, day one came to an end.
Day two started swiftly with most groups leaving the campsite at eight in the morning. My group was convinced that day two would be the hardest, both mentally and physically; however, this was the day we had the most fun!
My group and a few others arrived at Henfold lakes campsite at two o’clock and we had the best afternoon laying in the sunshine, playing cards, exploring the lake and enjoying each other’s company. This second campsite was extremely beautiful, and there were many people fishing in the lake and enjoying the views.
Finally, on the third and final day, we set off early from the campsite before a long day of walking and navigating. We eventually arrived back at Dorking station at 12.45.
Overall, I had such an incredible time, and I cannot wait for the qualifying expedition!

The Selsdon Community Clubhouse (formerly Selsdon Centre for the Retired) has been in Selsdon for 45 years! It provides a social / lunch club for our older individuals in Selsdon. New clients come to us as referrals from link workers, social prescribers or family members introduce them to us by knowing about our Centre or seeing it advertised in the Selsdon Gazette and on social media. We are centrally located, very close to Croydon High School for Girls, with free parking and on the bus routes. We have a beautiful bright environment with lots of natural light and views for our clients to enjoy!
Hot mid-day meals are served after which we engage our clients in activities such as board games, arts and crafts, quizzes, card games, bingo, raffles, and live music events. We also offer chiropody, hairdressing, hearing aid services as well as instruction in IT technology.
Our meeting room and larger space are available for hire during the day, in the evenings and at weekends.
Loneliness and isolation are big drivers for us to reduce and our Centre provides lots of social interaction particularly for those who have lost friends and do not have family around them. None of this is possible without the help of our valued volunteers who give of their time on a shift basis, three days a week when our lunch club is open. We are always look out.
Testimony from one of our volunteers:
“My 2-hour weekly session fits in well with my other commitments, although it is always great to do extra shifts preparing and serving food for special occasions, e.g. bingo or afternoon tea, if needed, and you have the time.”
“If you have some spare time and enjoy the company of and/or working with others, I’d certainly recommend that you pop in and see what a lovely place the Clubhouse is.”
