Recently, we held a Sixth Form Taster Day, ‘Taste of the Future’ for our Year 11 pupils. The event was based on three stages: Foundations, Perspectives and Horizons. The initial stage was exploring the building blocks for the pupils’ future with insights from Sixth Form leaders and current pupils. The second stage involved pupils engaging in thought-provoking discussions and hearing from inspiring educators on various topics that look beyond A-Level studies. The final stage was an opportunity for them to be inspired by our alumnae, who shared their journeys from Sixth Form to dynamic careers and life paths beyond Croydon High.
The pupils had 10 different subject areas to hear from on topics such as Business and Economics, ‘Lean In, Level Up: Unlock Your Inner Boss’, History honed in on ‘The impact of the recurring motif in Disney and beyond’ and Classics looked at ‘What does Taylor Swift have in common with Latin love elegy, and why?’
Following the break out session, the pupils heard from our four alumnae; Megan Barnes, Katie Scarrott, Varjitha Kunalan and Amy Lou with background in medicine and law, our alumnae provided insight into life after Croydon High for our Year 11 pupils. Some of the key reflections were:
- make the most of all the opportunities which Croydon High offer
- make the most of your resources and take accountability
- it’s OK to not know what you want to do if you know what you enjoy.
“Resilience, passion, using my voice has been the thing that’s kept me going and knowing that I’m doing the right thing for me. And I feel like those characteristics have been ingrained very, very quickly at Croydon High and reinforced at Sixth Form.”
-Megan Barnes, Doctor of Philosophy – PhD, Respiratory Medicine
One of our greatest and strongest communities is our Ivy Link Alumnae Croydon High School. Whether our alumnae are passing by and popping in for a quick visit or coming in to speak and inspire our current pupils, it is always a privilege to learn where our pupils have moved on to and the impact Croydon High has had on them.
