This term, Year 11 GCSE Geographers took part in not one, but two residential fieldwork trips to Southwold on the Suffolk coast. With one group visiting from 13–14 November and the second from 24–26 November, both trips offered a packed itinerary combining human and physical geography investigations delivered by the expert team at the Geography Fieldwork Academy.
On Day 1, students focused on urban fieldwork, collecting data in Southwold’s town centre on topics such as land use, environmental quality and perception of place. After returning to the Darsham Country Centre for the evening, they enjoyed some well-earned downtime and prepared for the following day’s coastal investigations.
Day 2 was dedicated to physical fieldwork along Southwold’s coastline. Students investigated longshore drift, groyne effectiveness and coastal management strategies, comparing different sections of the beach and practising key data collection techniques.
Interestingly, students on the two trips noted a reversal in longshore drift direction: the first group observed movement from south to north, while the second group recorded drift north to south. This unexpected variation sparked valuable discussion about changing coastal dynamics and the influence of wind direction and tidal conditions, highlighting how geography in the field doesn’t always follow the textbook.
Both groups experienced slightly different weather conditions, but all students remained enthusiastic and focused. The fieldwork provided a valuable opportunity to apply knowledge in a real-world setting and will be used directly to support their GCSE Paper 3 exam.
We were hugely impressed by the students’ behaviour, independence and engagement throughout both trips, and thank the staff and fieldwork tutors who made the experience so rewarding.
