The skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world. The Astrogazers Club stands provides our pupils with a unique opportunity to explore the cosmos and develop critical scientific skills.
What is Astrogazers?
Astrogazers is a co-curricular club that was initiated by Mrs Karteepan, Head of Physics, and designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for astronomy and space science amongst our pupils. Through hands-on projects such as launching weather balloons into the edge of space, and the latest project to launch a cube-sat into low earth orbit, pupils at Croydon High are able to be at the forefront of space exploration whilst learning essential skills such as curiosity, creativity and critical thinking.
Why does Astrogazers matter?
By engaging in space exploration, pupils gain a deeper understanding of STEAM principles and develop the technical and soft skills required for future careers in science, engineering, and beyond. This initiative not only supports the national STEAM agenda but also positions Croydon High as a leader in innovative, forward-thinking education.
What was Mission Aspiration?
Astrogazers in partnership with University of Bath successfully launched 2 weather balloons to the edge of space! They gathered video footage of the ascent and descent as well as obtaining data onboard the datalogger. The impact of Mission Aspiration has rippled through the wider school community and has led to a pupil from the junior school building and launching their own model rocket.
What is Mission Pegasus?
Astrogazers in partnership with University of Bath will become the first UK school to launch a CubeSat into space. Mission Pegasus aims to answer, ‘what can observing the Sun’s spectral wavelengths tell us about the Earth’s atmosphere?’
If Astrogazers are successful, Croydon High School may be the first all-girl school in the world to develop and launch a CubeSat into Low Earth Orbit.
