150 Years of Forging Paths: The Croydon High Story

Since its foundation in 1874, Croydon High School has been a pioneer in girls’ education, defined by a spirit of independence, courage, and academic ambition. Our mission has always been to ensure our girls aspire without limits, a philosophy that has guided us from our Victorian roots under the formidable, suffragette Headmistress Miss Dorinda Neligan to our current status as a leading HMC independent school.

As we look back on 150 years of excellence, we remain rooted in the four values that define our community: to be Aspirational, Empowering, Proud, and Kind. Whether trailblazing in STEM at the turn of the century or launching balloons into the stratosphere today, Croydon High develops forward-thinking young women who are equipped to lead and inspire in an ever-changing world.

1874 | A Bold Beginning

The school opens in September with 88 pupils under our first Head, Miss Dorinda Neligan. A former Red Cross nurse and future militant suffragette, she established a legacy of courage and justice that remains our hallmark.

1885–1902 | Pioneers in STEM

Defying Victorian norms, the school introduces Chemistry and invests in advanced equipment like the school theodolite to teach surveying and mathematics—the first step in our mission to empower girls in every field.

1911 | Expansion

The school’s reputation for excellence grows, leading to the opening of a Junior branch in Purley.

1928 | The Hockey Field Appeal

A fundraising appeal raises £400—a testament to a community proud of its school—to acquire land for the first dedicated hockey field.

1939–1945 | Survival and Resilience

While much of the school is evacuated to Wales, the buildings survive a nearby V-1 "buzz bomb" hit in 1944. By 1945, school life returns to a grateful normality, defined by the kindness and support of the school community.

1954 | The Duchess of Gloucester Visit

The school celebrated its 80th birthday and in a grand fete attended by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Gloucester, £950 was raised for the stage fund.

1959 | Modern Foundations

The physics and chemistry block and the Margaret Adams Library are opened on the Wellesley Road site.
