Wall of Women Spotlight | Isabel Wrightson (1890-1971)
March 23, 2026
Isabel Edith Wrightson (1890–1971) was a British artist and educator whose work and teaching left a lasting impression on both the art world and generations of students. A pupil at Croydon High, Isabel went on to study at the Byam Shaw School for Drawing and Painting and later returned to teach for many years at Croydon High, before retiring in the early 1950s. Her artistic career flourished alongside her teaching. She exhibited regularly from 1919 to 1954, including at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. After retiring, she studied at the Forbes School of Painting in Newlyn and produced evocative watercolours of Cornish fishing ports. Her legacy lives on through her paintings and her influence as a teacher and mentor. One of Isabel’s artworks, Crown Hill, capturing this well-known road in Croydon, is currently being exhibited at the Museum of Croydon part of their Croydon Art Collection: Matching Masterpieces exhibition.
