March 13, 2026
Professor Kathryn Whaler’s pioneering work has shaped modern geophysics and inspired generations of scientists worldwide. Following her school days at Croydon High, Kathryn earned a first-class BSc in Mathematical Physics from the University of Sussex and a PhD in geomagnetism from the University of Cambridge. She became the first woman appointed to a UK Chair in Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. A global leader in geomagnetic research, she directed the GEOSPACE satellite project and advanced understanding of Earth’s core, planetary magnetism, and African rift dynamics. Former President of the Royal Astronomical Society and IUGG, she has received numerous honours, including the RAS Price Medal, the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society, their highest award, and has received an Honorary DSc from the University of Sussex. We are honoured to feature Professor Kathy on our Wall of Women – she is an incredible inspiration to our girls. Kathy talked to our Astrogazers about a career in Geophysics – check this out here.
