Croydon High Celebrates World Book Day All Week!
March 23, 2026
We started our week of book-inspired fun on Monday with the launch of our fan fiction writing competition, where pupils could celebrate their favourite fictional worlds by writing their own stories about them. We had lots of fabulous entries, taking inspiration from a wide range of genres. It was very hard to pick an overall winner, but Lily BB’s rewriting of My Name’s Not Friday really showed how deeply she had engaged with the book. Sophie S (Yr 8) and Amari P (Yr 10) were very close runners-up. Well done to you all.
On Tuesday lunchtime, a group of Senior school pupils went over to read with the Juniors in their wonderful library. Lots of stories were read and book joy shared. When it was time to return, everyone wanted to know when we could go back and do it again. Soon, I hope!
On Wednesday, we held our first ever Book Swap in the hall during break and lunch. Thank you to everyone who donated books, we had a fantastic selection! Lots of happy readers came away with a new book (or two). The recommendation bookmarks were also a big hit, with many pupils filling them in and sharing books they’ve enjoyed. The bookmarks are now on display in the LRC, so if you’re not sure what to read next, come along and take a look.
Thursday was the big day! Everyone looked incredible in their costumes, it was obvious how much hard work and thought had gone into them. Another huge thank you to all who helped and supported at home with the sourcing and making. There was so much creativity on display. It was truly joyful and a real demonstration of the delight stories bring to our lives.

There was reading for pleasure during tutor time and at lunch the annual Croydon High World Book Day Quiz in the LRC! Where we had a record-breaking number of teams take part. It was a tough competition, with only one point between the winning team and third place. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the teachers’ team didn’t make it into the top three. Better luck next time.
It was a fabulous day and a wonderful week. We’re already looking forward to next year!
