🎉Croydon High celebrates 150 years! 🎉
September 16, 2024

Croydon High turns an incredible 150 years – what a milestone!
Throughout the year, our pupils, families, alumnae and the community will have plenty of opportunities to come together and celebrate this momentous occasion with us.
Ms Davies shares, “Having opened our doors on the 14th September 1874, our founding headmistress Dorinda Neligan would be so proud of how the school has thrived and how pupils over the generations have broken down barriers. The founders of the GDST, Mrs Maria Grey, her sister Miss Emily Shirreff, Lady Stanley of Alderley and Miss Mary Gurney, believed that girls deserved the same opportunities as their brothers and Croydon High School was the second all-through GDST school to open its doors focusing on the education of young women. As you may know, the first site of the school was at North End before moving to Wellesley Road in central Croydon and then moving to the site we know and love today in 1966. Over the course of this academic year, we are planning a number of ways to celebrate those 150 years of inspiring history. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect upon who we are, where we have come from and where we want to go. There are so many reasons to celebrate of course, not least the growth of our school which has empowered generations of young women to aspire. We will recognise the legacy of those who have gone before and also look forward to the promise of an exciting future. Over the course of the year, there will be opportunities for us to come together as a community to mark this landmark anniversary. It will start on Monday 16 September where we will have a special assembly, a commemorative whole school photo and, crucially, cake!”
