Top of the Bench

The final stage of competing is complete – teams of our best Year 9, 10 and 11 chemists have undertaken all the tests needed to enter the regional level of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Top of the Bench competition. This week Year 10 Chemists grappled with tricky problems in their theory test. Last Thursday, Year 9 chemists tackled their practical session. They worked methodically and carefully to make a solution of copper(II) sulfate, which they used to perform a series of chemical tests – demonstrating their excellent observation skills.

Year 11 explored the chemistry of neutralisation with a thermometric titration for their experiment. Year 10 performed a series of chemical tests to deduce which compounds they had in solutions, as well as solving problems related to the chemistry of ligands and complexions – ordinarily studied by Upper Sixth students.

We will await to hear how our teams have performed against other schools… Good luck Chemistry superstars!
