Prizegiving 2019

On Thursday afternoon we celebrated the achievements of members of the Lower School at Prize Giving.

After awarding prizes to a significant number of girls in Years 7-10, our guest speaker, alumna (and former Head Girl) Su-Lin Garbett-Shiels, inspired the audience as she talked about her time at Croydon High. She described the talents she developed here and how they have helped her in later life. She has certainly put these lessons to good use with a hugely impressive career and is currently leading on climate change and environmental issues in her role in the Department for International Development.

Mrs Garbett-Shiels encouraged the girls to take risks and also to take advantage of all the opportunities available to them through their school.

The audience enjoyed sublime renditions of Ravel’s Laidranette, Imperatrice des Pagodes performed by Lower Sixth pupil Yutong

and Stella  (Year 10), and a particularly harmonious Trio by Adam Carse, performed by our own harmonious trio of Asha, Sophia and Eloane.

A dramatic interlude was provided by Freya and Abinaya who showcased an excerpt from The Cuckoo Sister by Vivien Alcock with great aplomb.

Special mention should be made of Emily Howes in Year 9, winner of the GDST Anne Hogg Modern Foreign Languages prize.

Our thanks to Chair of Governors, Mr Spiro for leading the proceedings and of course to our inspirational Guest Speaker.
