Young Enterprise Fiver Challenge Awards

After an exciting Year 6 Enterprise Challenge project, a team of 9 enthusiastic participants took part in the Fiver Challenge organised by Young Enterprise. The girls were given £5 each to start a business.

The team called themselves Croydon High Go Green ‘N’ Keep Clean. Their business plan was to create an awareness of sustainability in the local community; they invested their money in biodegradable pots and seeds to sell plant kits and encourage the idea of ‘grow your own’. Their plant kits had seeds, compost, biodegradable pots, growing instructions and a recipe card.  They got free compost from the local recycle centre and made bags out of newspapers for their packaging.

They then called in an expert to conduct workshops on sustainability for all pupils in the junior school and everybody enjoyed an enrichment opportunity where they were introduced to the 18 Sustainable Development Goals. All girls were encouraged to bring in £2 on Sustainability Day (an event planned by the team) and a percentage of the proceeds were to be given to a charity that supports sustainability causes. In exchange for the £2, the girls could attend the workshop, wear a green accessory to school and receive a hair grip with a lime green bow which they were allowed to wear with their uniform.

In addition to having a stall at the PTA summer fair with the ‘grow your own plant’ kits the team attracted tired pupils and parents to the after school pop-up stall by selling fresh homemade watermelon juice and cupcakes to maximize their profits.

After deducting £110 which was donated to Friends of the Earth https://friendsoftheearth.uk (a charity identified by the team after considerable amount of research), and paying the Young Enterprise a token amount for taking part in the competition, the girls made a net profit of £330.

A total of 59,500 pupils took part in this year’s National Fiver Challenge and Croydon High’s talented Go Green team was awarded the Highest Profit Winners in the 9-11 years category. The team was invited to the awards ceremony on 24th September and enjoyed a fun packed day with entertainment, treats and awards.  A huge well done to the girls and thank you to everyone involved for helping, motivating and supporting them.
